In it LiPuma talks about being there near the start of your career, first hearing you and not entirely digging it, then seeing you on BET doing “Body and Soul” and getting that light bulb moment - that you were a hardcore jazz purist. Seguing into someone else long in your life: Tommy LiPuma, your longtime producer, and the man behind the sessions that yielded “Turn Out the Lights” and “This Dream of You.” Did you read Ben Sidran’s new biography, “The Ballad of Tommy LiPuma?” We both know that it is a privilege to be able to make music, and put out records, in these times, and you hope that somebody else finds comfort in what we’re able to do. Now we have the time for evening dinners, to sit around as a family and talk about life and art. Not to undermine what I do, but hearing him up-close like this is something I rarely get the chance to do. ![]() I think his stuff’s more pointed that mine. Or what you’re going to play for each other? That’s a form of artistic expression, a means when words don’t arrive… The beauty of having Elvis at home is the excitement at wondering what he’s going to play for me at the end of the day. I talk to kids about this all the time: how this does not need to be your life’s work, but you should know what it feels like to play a ‘G’ on the piano, or pick up a guitar and know what that feels like. It’s an education to have access to this. I’m in awe of him every day, and how he works. So, being together, it’s a loving time for us and for our family. Being together is very unusual for us, especially in the last few years, because I go on tour, and Elvis is home, then he goes on tour, and I’m home. ![]() Like everyone, we’re taking time to love, laugh and comfort each other, and find comfort in music, art and reading. KRALL: You mean me and Elvis? Oh God, yeah. Do you and your husband talk much about work, like the fact that the two you have albums out this autumn with releases mere weeks from the other? VARIETY: You share a life with your family, currently in quarantine. This line-up played "Just You, Just Me," Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is The Ocean" and the Bob Dylan song, "This Dream Of You," on which Randall Krall plays accordion. The final session for this album took place at Capitol Studios with an ensemble featuring guitarist, Marc Ribot, the fiddle of Stuart Duncan and a rhythm section of Tony Garnier on bass and Karriem Riggins on drums. The album features Krall in a quartet with long-time colleagues, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Anthony Wilson on "Almost Like Being In Love" and "That's All", as well as a trio with Christian McBride and Russell Malone who play on "Autumn in New York" and "There's No You." The duos include a wonderful first-take performance of "I Wished On The Moon" from Krall and bassist, John Clayton and two vocal cuts - "More Than You Know" and "Don't Smoke In Bed" with accompaniment by pianist, Alan Broadbent, who also provided the string orchestration for "But Beautiful" and string arrangement on "Autumn In New York." LiPuma passed away in 2017 at the age of 80. ![]() The performances come from sessions in 20, on which Krall worked with her friend and longtime creative partner, Tommy LiPuma. Krall, was mixed by Al Schmitt, who worked closely with the artist to achieve notable intimacy and immediacy with her voice in the final balance. This Dream Of You, produced in May 2020 by Ms. As Diana says, "If 'But Beautiful' is the overture, then 'Singing In The Rain' is the end title." This Dream Of You is music for right now but it is also a "long playing record," one that feels like a movie that you might share with someone because you know they'll stay with it until the final reel.
